Elaeis Guineensis (Palm) Oil

A natural emollient and moisturizer (JANE IREDALE)

Emollient

“having the quality of softening or soothing the skin”

An emollient is an ingredient that provides a barrier to the skins natural moisture loss, preventing the natural evaporation of water and improving the smooth feel of the skin... dehydration is the leading cause of dry skin and for any moisturizer to really improve the condition of the skin it must first prevent, or slow, that natural moisture loss.

Oils, and their, derivatives, are all emollients. Emollients are made of,Gycerine which is water-loving due to its structure and fatty acids which contain long tails which are oil loving. Put both of these onto the one molecule and you get an emulsifier.

Emulsifiers

An emulsifier is any ingredient that helps keep ingredients such as oil and water from separating in an emulsion. They are the glue is you like that keeps everything blended together.

Esters

The process of esterification occurs when a fatty alcohol is reacted with a fatty acid.

Esters replace the Natural Fatty Esters within our skin, they help to smooth the skin’s texture and act as protection.

What that means in personal care development is the difference between a smooth spreading, less oily feeling, product because the resulting ester is a lighter emollient* which improves the slip**, oily feel, soaping***, and overall feel, of personal care products.

Geogard. Geogard is one of the few preservatives that are permitted by the organic certification bodies to be used in natural and organic cosmetics and we’ve made sure the lowest level possible has been used to safely protect and preserve the products.

The most important thing about the Geogard is that unlike other natural preservative systems like alcohol, is that it does not dry out the skin or cause nasty reactions in people with sensitive skin. In small proportions (like used in AEOS)

Sodium Benzoate has an alkalising and cleansing effect on the skin. Where the confusion lies is when Sodium Benzoate is added in high proportions where it can be an irritant. (AEOS)

Sodium Benzoate occurs in nature in certain fruits e.g. apples, plums and berries, and is a safe food grade preservative. It works together with gluconolactone (a natural by-product of fermentation and proven skin moisturizer), to form the Ecocert approved preservative system, Geogard.

Geogard is one of the few preservatives that are permitted by the organic certification bodies to be used in natural and organic cosmetics and we’ve made sure the lowest level possible has been used to safely protect and preserve the products. The most important thing about the

Geogard is that unlike other natural preservative systems like alcohol, is that it does not dry out the skin or cause nasty reactions in people with sensitive skin. In small proportions (like used in AEOS) Sodium Benzoate has an alkalizing and cleansing effect on the skin. Where the confusion lies is when Sodium Benzoate is added in high proportions where it can be an irritant. (AEOS)
